Kansas Wheat Commission and KAWG Release Annual ReportDate Posted: August 27, 2010 Manhattan, KSThe Kansas Wheat report for fiscal year 2010 -- now available online and in print -- reviews the major events of the year and documents the continued growth of the Kansas Wheat Commission and the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers. "Kansas Wheat accomplished a great deal in fiscal year 2010," says Justin Gilpin, chief executive officer of Kansas Wheat. "We invested more than $1 million in research, pursued many new marketing and education initiatives and hosted several key international trade groups wanting to learn more about how Kansas wheat fits into their needs. "Our annual report reflects all these accomplishments." The 12-page, full-color report covers highlights from the year including the 2010 wheat crop, first-ever Kansas Wheat Yield Contest and a new Web site that features the upcoming National Festival of Breads. The report also explains the research funding efforts used in various research proposals, including wheat quality surveys, new equipment, agronomic studies and new uses for wheat. In fiscal year 2010, the Kansas Wheat Commission committed about 30% its entire budget - to wheat research projects. Much of the investment funds new variety research at Kansas State University. A busy year for international marketing for Kansas Wheat included a visit from an 11-member Nigerian trade team sponsored by U.S. Wheat Associates. A team of wheat buyers from Brazil visited a farm near Scott City during the week of June 28, during one of the best harvests in the last 20 years. "International marketing is one of the key themes of the 2010 Annual Report," adds Gilpin. "With less than half of the wheat grown in Kansas actually consumed in the U.S., international markets must consume the rest. "Therefore, establishing and keeping positive relationships with our allies in the wheat industry is very important." The annual report also includes grower-letters from Doug Keesling, Kansas Wheat Commission Chairman, and Paul Penner, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers President. Keesling reflects on the change in the industry over the past year. Penner shares comments regarding the past year's performance and positioning for the future. For the first time ever, a recap of the annual report can be viewed in video version, online here. A print version is available online here. "At our annual meeting in July, we were able to show our annual report in a new video format," Gilpin says. "More than 130 Kansas wheat producers were able to celebrate the numerous accomplishments of Kansas Wheat." For more information, call 785-539-0255. Milling News
