Kansas Wheat Harvest Report Day 11: Many Areas Complete Harvest Ahead of Independence Day Holiday, But Some Will Continue Cutting WheatDate Posted: July 2, 2009 This is day 11 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas City Board of Trade, DeBruce Grain, the Kansas Grain & Feed Association and Kansas Wheat. The Fourth of July is only a day away and many Kansas farmers and grain elevator operators will be able to celebrate a successful harvest this Independence Day. But for others, the holiday will be spent in the thick of the Kansas wheat harvest. Aaron Harries, interim Chief Executive Officer of Kansas Wheat, reports harvest is finished at the Harries family farm near Bremen. Yields ranged from 50 to 80 bushels per acre with test weights at 60 pounds or higher. The Marshall County wheat harvest is 80% complete.
In Ottawa County, Dave Studebaker says harvest is on the verge of completion. It has been a much better harvest than expected; 60 days ago, yields in the low 40s were expected but at the end of the season, many farmers are averaging better than 50 bushels per acre. Test weights average greater than 61; protein averages 11. Several varieties including Post Rock, Fuller and Santa Fe have excelled this year. Dick Tippin, grain coordinator, Cooperative Grain and Supply, Hillsboro, says a few folks are cleaning up mudholes but for the most part, harvest is complete. In four locations, 2.7 million bushels have been received so far. Yields have been above average overall but vary from 25 to 70 bushels per acre. Protein content has averaged about 10.2. Kansas Association of Wheat Growers board member Herb Mattson says a good crop is expected in northwest Kansas, but the wheat wheat is green in his area of Thomas County. Harvest should commence on Independence Day. United Plains Ag locations in Tribune and Sharon Springs are about half done with harvest; custom harvesters are leaving Greeley County to head north, so the harvest pace has tapered off a bit. In Wallace County, harvest is still in full swing. Both locations report an average crop, with 60 pound test weights, 11.5-12 protein and yields averaging between 30 and 35 bushels per acre.
