General Mills, ADM and Walmart have launched a collaborative regenerative agriculture program covering 40,000 wheat acres across the Midwest, expanding efforts to improve soil health, strengthen supply chain resilience and support wheat producers.
The initiative targets wheat growing regions in Illinois, Indiana and Missouri where General Mills sources wheat from ADM for products sold through Walmart and Sam's Club. The companies said the effort is designed to strengthen farming communities while improving the long-term sustainability of the wheat supply chain.
The program builds on a 2023 commitment by General Mills and Walmart to advance regenerative agriculture across 600,000 shared acres by 2030. More than 560,000 wheat acres are already participating in those efforts across the United States. ADM, which manages nearly 5 million regenerative acres globally, has joined the initiative to accelerate progress in the three Midwest states.
ADM will coordinate the program on the ground by providing farmers with technical assistance and financial incentives to adopt regenerative practices such as no-till farming and cover crops. The companies said the approach is intended to reduce barriers to adoption, encourage broader participation and deliver measurable environmental improvements.
Technical assistance will also be provided by American Farmland Trust and Ducks Unlimited. Initial projects are expected to improve soil health, enhance water quality and increase carbon sequestration while serving as a model for collaboration across the agricultural value chain.
The collaboration reflects a shared focus on regenerative agriculture as a strategy to strengthen food system resilience while supporting growers. The participating companies said coordinated investment across the supply chain can help expand adoption of sustainable farming practices and improve long-term agricultural productivity.
For General Mills, the project supports its goal of advancing regenerative agriculture on 1 million acres by 2030. The effort also contributes to Walmart's target, developed in collaboration with the Walmart Foundation, of protecting, more sustainably managing or restoring at least 50 million acres by 2030. For ADM, the initiative aligns with its broader efforts to help farmers improve soil health across millions of acres worldwide.
