IAOM Central, Wheat State, and Texoma Districts Meet in Branson, MO, July 26-27, 2018

Approximately 65 members from the International Association of Operative Millers (IAOM) Central, Wheat State, and Texoma Districts attended the 2018 Summer Meeting and Technical Conference, July 26-27 at the Chateau on the Lake, Branson, MO.

With spouses and friends, the total attendance was about 105.

A golf outing (in a foursome format) was held on Thursday morning, July 26, at the Buffalo Ridge Springs Golf Course, Hollister, MO.

A lunch for 35 golfers was co-sponsored by Perten Instruments and REPCO.

Additional sponsors included: Bratney Companies, Bühler, Corbion, Design Corrugating, Douglas Products, Food Protection Services, Kice Industries, Nitta Corporation of America, Pepper Maintenance, Sefar, and Vortex.

Although no golfer won, a hole-in-one prize of $10,000 was sponsored by Bulk Conveyors Inc.

The social hour followed by a casual picnic-style buffet was held indoors Thursday evening, July 26, in the Versailles Room at the Chateau on the Lake.

On Friday, July 27, the technical program was opened and moderated by Travis Hawkinson, IAOM Central District chairperson, and head miller, Ardent Mills, Alton, IL.

Hawkinson also expressed his thanks to Michael Branson, market manager - food and beverage, Sefar, Inc., Kansas City, MO, for his help in organizing the meeting.

Randy Garvert, senior director-operations, Ardent Mills, Denver, CO and current IAOM treasurer, provided an update about the activities of the IAOM.

Garvert reminded attendees about IAOM’s 123rd annual Conference and Expo to be held April 15-19, 2019 at the Hilton Denver City Center, Denver, CO.

Garvert also took the opportunity to express thanks to those who participated in the seventh and very successful International Milling Education Foundation (IMEF) silent and live auctions held at the 2018 IAOM Conference and Expo, April 9-13, in Atlanta, GA.

The money raised during the auctions, along with pledges and checks from several companies, raised more than $120,000 and brought the total IMEF funds from the 2017 conference to exceed the $1 million mark, which continues to be the foundation’s largest annual fundraising event.

The morning program included several presentations, covering: 2018 Wheat Crop Update, Mark Hodges, executive director, Plains Grains, Inc., Stillwater, OK; Farmers – The Solution to Food Problems, Andrew Hoelscher, Farm Strategy, Ellsworth, KS; Sanitary Transport Best Practices for Bulk Materials, Ron Galle, director, food safety and regulatory, ADM Milling, Overland Park, KS; Multi-Generational Scramble, Emily Bowers, senior director – education and operations, Bakery Equipment Manufacturing and Allieds (BEMA), Overland Park, KS; and Fogging, Spot, and Pulse Fumigation, Patrick Plumer, operations manager, Kansas City, KS.

Before the lunch break, time was made available to visit the table top displays of 14 participating allied trades.

During the afternoon program, presentations included:

Also attending the conference were Melinda Farris, executive vice president; Tom Sargent, director of professional development, and Angela Jenness, director of meetings and exhibitions, IAOM, Lenexa, KS.

Sargent provided a brief overview concerning upcoming IAOM events, the offerings of correspondence milling and resident milling courses, details about IAOM’s website and milling career website, as well as discussed the utility of IAOM’s mobile app, IAOM 365, which is available as a free download from Apple’s App Store or Google Play.

Garvert presented IAOM distinguished-service certificates of appreciation to several district officers.

During the conference, the social hour before Friday night’s banquet and a generous hospitality suite with a full array of snacks were sponsored by 26 allied trades for the Central, Wheat State, and Texoma Districts.

2018 IAOM Wheat State District and Central District Winter Meetings

The Wheat State District Winter Social is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 7, 2018 (time TBA) at the Wichita Thunder vs. Rapid City Rush Hockey matchup, Intrust Bank Arena, Wichita, KS.

In addition, the Central, Wheat State, and Texoma Districts’ 2019 summer meeting and technical conference will again be held at the Chateau on the Lake, Branson, MO. Specific dates to be determined.
