North American Millers' Association Submits Comments on USDA's National Organic Program Proposed Rule

Arlington, VA - Oct. 5, 2020 - Today, the North American Millers' Association submitted comments on the proposed rule, "National Organic Program; Strengthening Organic Enforcement."

While NAMA supports the intent of the proposed rule to further curtail fraudulent activities within the organic market, we are concerned that the proposal would have damaging unintended consequences on trade between the U.S., Mexico, and Canada due to the conflict between the speed of commerce in North America and the framework laid out in this proposal for import certificates.

As such, NAMA laid out several recommendations in the comments, including the use of National Organic Program (NOP) Import Certificates based on primary mode of transportation, the development of pre-approved suppliers, and a delayed implementation of the rule for rail and truck transport.

NAMA President Jane DeMarchi stated, "NAMA looks forward to partnering with government agencies to eliminate fraudulent activities in the organic market, while ensuring that trade remains free flowing in order to get the highest quality product to the consumer at minimal cost"
