USDA First Quarter Flour Milling Report: Total Production Down 3% From Fourth Quarter 2020

All wheat ground for flour during the first quarter 2021 was 225 million bushels, down 3 percent from the fourth quarter 2020 grind of 231 million bushels and down 4 percent from the first quarter 2020 grind of 233 million bushels.

First quarter 2021 total flour production was 104 million hundredweight, down 3 percent from the fourth quarter 2020 and down 4 percent from the first quarter 2020.

Whole wheat flour production, at 4.83 million hundredweight during the first quarter 2021, accounted for 5 percent of the total flour production. Millfeed production from wheat in the first quarter 2021 was 1.63 million tons.

The daily 24-hour milling capacity of wheat flour during the first quarter 2021 was 1.59 million hundredweight.

Durum wheat ground for flour and semolina production during the first quarter of 2021 totaled 17.2 million bushels, down less than 1 percent from the fourth quarter 2020 and down less than 1 percent from the first quarter 2020.

First quarter 2021 durum flour and semolina production was 8.09 million hundredweight, down 1 percent from the fourth quarter 2020 and down 1 percent from the first quarter 2020.

Whole wheat durum flour and semolina production was 143,000 hundredweight, down 3 percent from 147,000 hundredweight in the fourth quarter 2020 and down 16 percent from 171,000 hundredweight from the first quarter 2020.

First quarter durum wheat millfeed production was 116,634 tons and the daily 24-hour milling capacity for durum and semolina production was 131,730 hundredweight.

Rye ground for flour during the first quarter of 2021 was 457,000 bushels, down 4 percent from the fourth quarter 2020 and down 13 percent from the first quarter 2020.

Rye flour production during the first quarter of 2021 was 209,000 hundredweight, compared to 216,000 hundredweight in the previous quarter and 244,000 hundredweight in the same quarter for the previous year.

The daily 24-hour milling capacity for rye milling was 9,655 hundredweight for the first quarter 2021.
