Safety Resolutions ... Milling Safety Leaders Share Their Planned Areas For Improvements in 2022

Safety leaders share their planned areas for improvement in 2022.

Levi Burton| Corporate Safety Director | Grain Millers Inc. | Eden Prairie, MN

“We’re always looking for greater employee engagement so our management team is looking at ways to track and create goals to improve our safety commitment. The thought is to have each management team member have five to 10 proactive safety goals they pursue each week.

“We conducted a dust hazard analysis at all locations by January 1, 2022, and we’re looking for ways to minimize our dust hazards in order to improve, site by site, our compliance and safety.

“Finally, we continue to improve employee training, including safety and other training to ensure our employees are ready to handle the jobs they perform. This includes remote and in-person training on items that affect/impact our bottom line. We want our training to be impactful and change behaviors in a safe and positive manner.”

“As we continue into 2022, we remain focused on building our Ardent Mills team member engagement by advancing our values-based culture.

“One of our four core values within the organization is safety. Each day, we strive to ensure the safety of our products and to provide team members a safe environment to excel in nurturing our customers through grain-based solutions.

“A key component of our safety culture is a behavior-based safety conversation program called “SCORE,” which stands for Safety, Cultivating, Ownership, Respect, and Empowerment. Our team members focus on recognizing safe work behaviors in the workplace and giving positive recognitions to fellow teammates for working safe while completing their daily tasks.

“The positive conversations among team members further promotes our values-based organization and allows greater growth in overall engagement, as well.

“Another key resolution this year is a continued analysis of safety incident root causes and identification of common contributing factors.

“To leverage best practice sharing, we hold weekly virtual conference calls to review safety incidents and what corrective actions were completed, so Ardent Mills team members across North America can learn new approaches on staying safe each day.

“Finally in 2022, we are collaborating on safety strategies with food manufacturing EHS peers to further deliver upon a people-first promise for a safe and engaging workplace for all Ardent Mills team members.”
