Four K-State students and one professional to receive IMEF scholarships.

Five recipients of International Milling Education Foundation (IMEF) scholarships were announced during the IMEF Breakfast, May 4, at the 126th IAOM Conference and Expo in Richmond, VA.

Grain Millers/Christian F. Kongsore Scholarship

Caleb Kats, a Kansas State University (KSU) junior, received the Christian F. Kongsore-Grain Millers, Inc. Scholarship. He was awarded $4,000 toward tuition and expenses for the 2022-23 academic year.

Kats is involved in many organizations at KSU, including the Wheat State Agronomy Club, Milling Science Club, and is on the Kansas State Crops Judging Team.

Kats interned at Grain Millers, Inc. in St. Ansgar, IA, during the summer of 2021.

Brenden Meek, a junior in the milling science and management program, also received the Christian F. Kongsore-Grain Millers, Inc. Scholarship. He was awarded $5,000 toward the 2022-23 academic year.

Meek has interned with Miller Milling, Bunge Milling, and will be with Grain Craft in the summer of 2022.

Meek is the head of the flour sales team for the Milling Science Club and is also a KSU College of Agriculture Ambassador.

He is expected to graduate ahead of schedule in December 2022.

The Christian F. Kongsore Scholarship was established in 2013 by a donation from Grain Millers, Inc., which was cofounded by Kongsore.

Born in Oslo, Norway in 1927, Kongsore worked at his family’s flour mill as a second-generation miller and later moved to the United States. He graduated in 1954 from KSU with a degree in milling science. He dedicated his life to the milling profession and its people.

Distinguished Professors’ Scholarship

Brooklyn Terstriep, a junior at KSU with a major in milling science management, received the IMEF Distinguished Professors’ Scholarship. She was awarded $4,000 toward tuition expenses for the 2022-23 academic year.

Terstriep is an active member of the Milling Science Club and part of the Flour Sales team.

She has completed three internships and will be attending the Swiss School of Milling in the fall 2022 semester.

Matthew Anschutz, a sophomore at KSU majoring in milling science management, was also named a recipient of the IMEF Distinguished Professors’ Scholarship.

He is an active member of the Milling Science Club, where he serves as the event chair.

Anschutz has completed one internship with Treehouse Foods and says that he is interested in the business side of milling, but he also likes the mechanical and hands-on side of working with milling equipment.

The Distinguished Professors’ Scholarship recognizes milling science professors who have been influential to the milling industry and the International Association of Operative Millers (IAOM), including Dale Eustace, Gene Farrell, Arlin Ward, John Wingfield, and John Shellenberger.
