USDA Weekly Weather and Crop Bulletin (8/30): Lower Midwest Continues to Experience Dry Conditions

According to today's Weekly Weather and Crop Bulletin from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), dramatically heavy rain fell early in the week in northeastern Texas before shifting to the central Gulf Coast States. Rainfall totals of 4 to 10 inches were common, with 10- to 15-inch amounts observed in the hardest-hit areas.

In Texas, flash flooding engulfed the Dallas-Fort Worth area on August 21-22, followed by extensive lowland flooding in the lower Mississippi Valley and environs. Excessive wetness was also detrimental to maturing summer crops in the Mississippi Delta, with potential impacts on crop quality.

In contrast, little or no rain fell during the week in several areas, including the central Plains, lower Midwest, and Tennessee Valley. Spotty, locally heavy showers dotted the North, from Montana into the Northeast, causing minor fieldwork delays but providing local relief in areas experiencing drought.
