Why I Believe in IAOM ... Bob Ruckman, Grain Craft

Grain Craft

Birmingham, AL

IAOM Member Since 1991

“I started in the industry after graduating from Kansas State University in 1991. I began working for ADM Milling, and my co-workers got me involved in the association.

They invited me to a meeting, and from then on I’ve been attending meetings and participating.

“IAOM has opened doors to meeting so many people in the industry with whom I could share ideas and learn from.

It’s been a big positive in regard to my growth in the milling industry.

“Throughout my career I’ve moved to many locations around the country, and I’ve served in different capacities at the Ohio Valley, Niagara and Southeastern districts.

I’ve been a committee chair and vice chair, as well as a member of the international Board of Directors for about eight years. Currently, I serve on the Education Committee.

“As far as value for IAOM membership, the interaction with fellow millers has been great for me.

I have been fortunate to meet many wonderful people through IAOM, some of whom I consider mentors.

These relationships initiated through networking opportunities have been big for me.

“Lastly, it’s a great way to keep up with trends in the industry, particularly food safety and personal safety.

Those things kind of transcend the industry, and IAOM is a conduit to disseminate ideas to get everyone in the industry on board with what’s important.”

“I absolutely recommend IAOM for any person in our industry, or even in related industries.

I know a lot of IAOM members also participate in groups like [the Grain Elevator and Processing Society], and we share some training and things through Kansas State University and correspondence courses.
