Star of the West Milling Co. was awarded a $4.9 million grant as part of the USDA Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities. The project will last five years, with the grant being spread out over the life of the project.

The milling company says it will work closely with Michigan growers to record and reward existing climate-smart management while also supporting new management for food crops.

Along with this project, Star of the West partnered with The Nature Conservancy to pilot a sustainably-grown wheat incentives program for farmers in March 2022, which focused on improving resilience, biodiversity, and soil health on wheat ground located within the Saginaw Bay Watershed.
